Calnova Awinings
The Calnova
Awning — Built for
Large Spans
A 40×40mm square steel torsion bar, a BAT-patented tipping system, and motorised operation as standard. Made to cover up to 12 metres — with fabric fully protected in the cassette when retracted.

How the Calnova works
Fabric in the cassette. Arms out. Pitch on demand.
When you retract the Calnova, the fabric rolls back into the 40×40mm square steel torsion bar cassette — shielded from weather, UV, and bird mess. The articulated arms fold but stay visible beneath the cassette, which keeps the profile slim and allows easy access for maintenance or inspection.
Extend it and the arms unfold in a controlled arc. The BAT-patented tipping brackets in the front bar let you dial in the slope — anywhere from flat (0°) to steep (45°) — without tools and with a snug close guaranteed even at the most acute angles. Motorised operation with manual override comes as standard.
40×40mm square steel torsion bar
Most awnings use aluminium or round-section bar. The Calnova's square steel torsion bar distributes the load across multiple bracket points — critical for maintaining rigidity across the full 12-metre maximum span without arm flex.
BAT-patented tipping brackets
The patented bracket system allows continuous pitch adjustment from 0° to 45° and — unlike most adjustable awnings — guarantees the cassette closes flush even at steep inclinations. Useful when you need to angle rain away sharply.
Motorised with manual override — standard
Every Calnova ships with a tubular motor as standard. Manual override is included. Compatible with sun, wind, and rain sensors. You can also specify smart home or timer control at the survey stage at no extra engineering cost.
Why the Calnova stands out
Built differently to most awnings
A steel back bar, a patented pitch system, and motorised operation as standard — these aren't typical on a mid-market awning. Here's what makes the difference in practice.
Square Steel Back Bar
The 40×40mm square torsion bar is the structural spine of the Calnova. It supports multiple brackets and arms across spans up to 12 metres without twisting — something round or aluminium section struggles to maintain cleanly at these widths.
BAT-Patented Tipping System
Adjust pitch from 0° to 45° in use, and the patented bracket design guarantees the cassette closes flush at every angle — not just at the factory-default position. Most awning tipping systems only close cleanly at low inclinations.
Motorised as Standard
A tubular motor is built in — not an optional extra. Compatible with sun, wind, and rain sensors straight away. Manual override is included. No retrofitting needed if you want to add smart home automation later.
Optional LED Arm Lighting
LED strips can be integrated directly into the arms — not just the front bar — for even light distribution across the full canopy. Wired direct, invisible when retracted. Extends evening use without external clip-on lighting.
5-Year System Warranty
The Calnova carries a 5-year warranty on both the system and arms. UK-based support with spare parts available and fast delivery. That's a longer warranty than most awnings in this class — and it covers the structural components, not just cosmetics.
Wall or Ceiling Mounting
The Calnova's bracket system is designed for both wall and ceiling (soffit) installation. Bracket spacing is optimised for load distribution across the back bar — more fixing points are needed than on a cassette model, and our survey covers all of this before you commit.
BAT-Patented Technology
Pitch angle from 0° to 45° — and it closes flush at every one
The tipping system's party piece is the guaranteed snug cassette closure. At steep inclinations, most awnings leave a gap in the cassette — the Calnova's patented bracket design keeps the closure tight regardless of the angle you set.
- 0° – 10°
Flat — Maximum Headroom
Near-level for maximum headroom clearance. Good for overhead shade on a covered structure or where height above is limited. Cassette closes perfectly flush.
- 15° – 25°
Standard — Everyday Shade
The most-used position. Good afternoon sun coverage, enough slope for light rain to run off the front edge quickly. Works well for both domestic and commercial use.
- ↓35° – 45°
Steep — Rain Clearance
Maximum drainage angle for heavy downpours. The patented bracket guarantees the cassette still closes flush at 45° — where competitors typically leave a gap.

Where it works best
Large spans. Commercial demand. Residential finish.
The Calnova is designed for installations where a standard domestic awning won't cut it — whether that's a wide residential terrace, a restaurant courtyard, or a commercial frontage that needs to look right when retracted.
- 01
Large Residential Patios
Wider patio areas — 4 to 7 metres — where a standard domestic awning would need multiple units. The Calnova spans the width as a single unit, keeping the look clean. The steel back bar maintains arm alignment across the full width.
- 02
Restaurant & Café Terraces
6 to 12-metre spans over alfresco dining areas. The commercial-grade steel construction handles arm leverage at these widths. LED arm lighting extends evening service. Sensor compatibility means staff don't have to manually retract in changeable weather.
- 03
Shop & Retail Frontages
The square cassette profile sits neatly against a modern shopfront fascia. Stripe fabrics in business colours are common here. Ceiling (soffit) fixing avoids wall fixings through display windows. Logo and branding printing available on fabric.
- 04
Hotels & Hospitality
Poolside terraces, courtyard dining, and entrance canopies. The steel construction and acrylic or PVC fabric hold up to the volume of use in hospitality settings. Motorised operation with wind sensor means the awning manages itself during service.
- 05
Garden Rooms & Extensions
Wall or soffit-mounted to the garden room structure, the Calnova shades the adjacent patio. The 0°–45° tipping range is particularly useful here — the afternoon sun angle changes significantly over a few hours, and you can adjust without tools.
- 06
Commercial Office Exteriors
Staff outdoor areas, ground-floor break spaces, and meeting-room exits where a tidy retracted appearance matters. The three standard frame colours keep things neutral. Cross-over arms allow up to 4-metre projection where building setback is limited.

What customers say
Fitted and rated by our customers
"We needed 9 metres across the front of the terrace and the Calnova was the only awning in the range that could do it as a single span. The anthracite frame against our stonework looks exactly right. The tipping system is genuinely useful — we run it at about 20° for shade and steepen it the moment it starts raining."
"The surveyor explained the difference between wall and soffit fixing for our property type — we'd assumed it had to be wall-mounted. The soffit option looked much cleaner. Motorised as standard was a big selling point; the wind sensor has already retracted it automatically twice when we weren't around."
"Three years in and the steel back bar still looks true — no visible sag on the 7-metre span. We added the LED arm lighting which covers the whole seating area evenly. The 5-year warranty was part of the reason we went with it — and the UK spare parts support has been useful once already."
Common questions
Calnova awning FAQs
If your question isn't here, ask at the free home survey. No obligation, no pressure — just a straight conversation about what will work for your space and budget.
What does "semi-cassette" mean on the Calnova?
Semi-cassette means the fabric rolls back into the square steel back bar housing when retracted — fully protected from weather, UV, and bird mess. The articulated arms fold but remain exposed on the underside rather than enclosing inside the cassette. A fully cassetted awning conceals everything, arms included. The semi-cassette approach gives a slimmer wall profile and lighter weight while still protecting the fabric, and it keeps the arms accessible for inspection and maintenance without removing the cassette housing.
What's the maximum width the Calnova can be made?
12 metres wide as a single span. The minimum width is 2.1 metres. The 40×40mm square steel torsion bar is what makes the wide span practical — it supports multiple bracket and arm attachment points across the full width without the torsional flex you get in round or aluminium-section back bars. Projection (how far the awning extends outward) ranges from 1.6 metres up to 3.6 metres standard, or up to 4 metres with optional cross-over arms.
Does the Calnova come motorised or is that extra?
Motorised with manual override is standard — it's included in the base price. The motor is a tubular unit inside the roller tube, so nothing is visible externally. The Calnova is compatible with sun, wind, and rain sensors from the outset; adding sensors doesn't require retrofitting the motor or control unit. Smart home and timer control can be specified at the survey if needed.
What does the BAT-patented tipping system actually do?
The tipping system adjusts the pitch angle of the fabric canopy between 0° (near-flat) and 45° (steep), and the BAT-patented bracket design guarantees a flush cassette closure at every angle. This is the key difference from standard adjustable awnings, which typically only close cleanly at low inclinations and leave a visible gap at the cassette at steeper angles. In practice you use it to drain rain away quickly at steep settings, or to angle the shade optimally as the sun moves.
What fixing options are available — does it have to go on a wall?
No — the Calnova can be wall-mounted or ceiling (soffit) mounted. The bracket spacing is set during the survey based on the fixing surface and span, as the back bar design requires more fixings than a cassette model. The surveyor will assess your specific situation and recommend the correct option before you commit to anything. Both mounting types are covered in the standard price.
What are cross-over arms and when are they needed?
Cross-over arms are an optional upgrade that allows projections up to 4 metres — beyond the standard 3.6-metre maximum. They use a crossing arm geometry that distributes the extension load differently, allowing greater reach without increasing arm weight proportionally. They're typically specified for commercial settings where a wider covered area is needed and ceiling height allows the steeper arm travel angle that cross-over geometry requires.
What fabrics are available and can they be printed with a logo?
The Calnova takes UV-resistant acrylic fabrics and PVC-coated fabrics. Acrylic is the standard outdoor choice — solution-dyed for fade resistance. PVC-coated versions offer greater water resistance and are specified for very exposed or high-use commercial sites. Both options are available with branding and logo printing for commercial installations. The surveyor brings a sample book; printing options can be discussed and quoted at the same visit.
What warranty comes with the Calnova?
The Calnova carries a 5-year warranty on the system and arms. This is backed by UK-based support with spare parts available and fast delivery. The warranty covers the structural components — the back bar, arms, tipping brackets, and motor — not just cosmetic elements. If something needs attending to, there's no waiting on import lead times for parts.
