How it works

A frame that drops into the reveal and stays there

The screen frame is made from powder-coated aluminium, cut precisely to the clear opening of your window. Our team measures the reveal, not the glass. The frame drops in flush with the window surround, held by spring-loaded clips on all four sides. Nothing is drilled into the uPVC or timber.

The mesh arrives already stretched and capped within the frame. It won't bow in wind or sag in warm weather. Once fitted, there is nothing to adjust.

  • Measured to the reveal

We take the clear opening size inside your window surround. The screen sits flush with no visible gaps at the edges, which matters because even a small gap is enough for midges.

  • Mesh under tension

Fibreglass or polyester mesh is stretched tight and retained by an aluminium edge bead inside the frame. You won't hear it rattle in wind and it won't sag over time.

  • Clean in situ

A soft brush every couple of months keeps the mesh clear. When it needs a proper rinse, the frame lifts out from the spring clips in about 30 seconds and drops straight back in.

Product features

What makes fixed frame screens different

Each point below relates specifically to how this product works and where it differs from other insect screen options.

  • No seasonal removal

Most insect screens come down in autumn and go back up in spring. This one stays fitted all year. The aluminium frame is powder-coated for outdoor durability. No autumn takedown, no storage problem, no clips going missing over winter.

  • Mesh under tension

The mesh is stretched tight within the aluminium profile at the workshop, then locked in with an edge bead. It arrives at full tension, stays flat in the frame, and won't bow outward in wind or sag during warm weather.

  • Slim aluminium profile

The frame face sits around 15mm deep inside the window reveal. From outside it reads as a clean line, not a bolt-on addition. Powder-coated to match your window colour, so the screen looks part of the window rather than an afterthought.

  • Multiple mesh grades

Standard grey fibreglass handles the majority of insects at 0.9mm aperture. Charcoal polyester gives better outward visibility for ground-floor rooms. Pet-resistant mesh survives scratching. Solar privacy mesh reduces afternoon glare as well as insects.

  • Powder-coated to your frame colour

We match the screen frame to your window. White, cream, brown, grey, anthracite, black. The powder-coat process gives a durable finish that won't fade or chip in normal conditions. Any standard UPVC or timber frame colour in the range is covered.

  • No cords, no moving parts

Nothing mechanical means nothing to fail. No spring mechanism to jam, no cord to snap. Children and pets can press against the mesh without operating anything they shouldn't. Child-safe by design, with no pinch points or loose components.

Mesh options

The mesh you pick changes more than you might expect

Standard fibreglass does the job for most homes. But if you have cats that scratch at windows, a room that gets strong afternoon glare, or a north-facing kitchen prone to midges, there is a grade that suits the situation better.

  • Standard Fibreglass

    0.9mm aperture · Grey

The default choice. Handles flies, wasps, mosquitoes and midges. Good outward visibility. Works in most rooms and window orientations.

  • Charcoal Polyester

    0.9mm aperture · Charcoal

Same insect protection as standard, but the darker colour reduces the mirror effect when looking out from inside. Better for ground-floor rooms and south-facing windows.

  • Solar Privacy Mesh

    0.6mm aperture · Black

The denser mesh cuts glare on south and west-facing rooms. Some reduction in airflow, though less than you might expect. Reduces outside visibility during daylight hours.

  • Pet-Resistant Mesh

    0.9mm aperture · Grey

Thicker aluminium-coated strands resist clawing from cats and small dogs. Not indestructible, but far more resilient than standard fibreglass where pets are involved.

Frame finishes

Powder-coated to match your window

The frame goes through the same powder-coat process used for UPVC window trim. We colour-match to your existing window so the screen reads as part of the window rather than a separate fitting.

  • Most popular

    White

The standard for most modern UPVC window systems. Clean and unobtrusive against white frames and white-painted reveals.

  • Period homes

    Cream

Suits older properties and cream-frame UPVC systems. A better match than white against warm-toned window surrounds and painted timber.

  • Modern

    Anthracite Grey

Popular with modern flush casement systems and grey-frame aluminium windows. Pairs well with charcoal mesh for a coordinated dark look.

  • Timber & UPVC

    Brown / Mahogany

Matches older brown UPVC and timber-effect window frames common in properties built in the 1980s and 1990s. Often the right call where white would look out of place.

Best applications

Where fixed frame screens make the most difference

Some rooms get more out of permanent insect screens than others. These are the six we hear about most from customers.

01

Bedrooms

Sleep with the window open on warm nights without waking up to a mosquito at 3am. The screen lets you ventilate properly overnight without the window becoming an issue you have to deal with in the dark.

02

Children's rooms

Fresh air during the afternoon nap, with no wasps coming in. The fixed frame has no cords or moving parts, so there is nothing for small hands to pull at or get caught on.

03

Kitchens

Cooking smells draw flies in fast. A screen on the kitchen window means you can run the extractor fan alongside an open window without turning the room into a landing strip. One of the most consistently mentioned rooms by our customers.

04

Home offices

An open window improves concentration. Flies circling the monitor do not. The screen lets you work with the window open all day without thinking about it.

05

Conservatories

The hottest room in the house in summer also tends to attract the most insects. Screens on the opening casements make a conservatory properly usable on warm days rather than a room you sit in with the windows shut and sweat.

06

Ground-floor sitting rooms

Windows at ground level are the most exposed to insects coming in from the garden. A fixed frame screen adds year-round protection without changing the look of the room or blocking any light.

Customer reviews

What customers say

★★★★★

"Had these fitted on all four bedroom windows last spring. We back onto the River Dee in Chester and midges are terrible from June onwards. First summer in years without waking up to something buzzing in my ear. Fitter measured up and had them in within two hours."

Mark T.
Fixed frame screens on four bedroom windows, Chester
★★★★★

"Went for charcoal mesh on the front-facing windows and standard grey at the back. Can't make them out from the street at all, which was my main concern. The kitchen window has been a revelation during cooking."

Joanne P.
Mixed mesh types, eight windows, Durham
★★★★★

"Had magnetic screens before that fell off when you opened the window, and a roller type that got stuck halfway up after two summers. These just stay in and do their job. Nothing to fiddle with. Should have done it years ago."

FAQ

Common questions

Anything else worth knowing before you book? Call us on YOURPHONENUMBER and ask.

Can the screen be removed if I need to clean the glass?

Yes. The frame lifts out from the spring-loaded clips without tools. It isn't designed for regular removal, but when you need to clean the glass from inside or do a full window service, the frame comes out in about 30 seconds and drops straight back in.

Will it stop wasps as well as flies?

Yes. The standard 0.9mm mesh aperture is well below the body size of any common UK insect, including wasps, bluebottles, mosquitoes, midges and moths. The mesh won't stop fine dust or pollen, and if hay fever is a serious issue for you, a different solution may suit you better.

Does the screen reduce ventilation through the window?

Very little. A clean mesh at 0.9mm aperture has negligible effect on airflow under normal conditions. Dust build-up over time does reduce it, which is why a brush-down every couple of months keeps performance up.

What window types does it work on?

Casement, tilt and turn, top-hung and side-hung windows all work well with the fixed frame system. Sash windows are trickier and need a different approach. We'll advise at the survey if your window type calls for something different.

What if the mesh gets torn or damaged?

We can re-mesh the existing frame at lower cost than a full replacement. Most tears come from pet scratching or impact. If the aluminium frame itself gets bent, a new frame is usually the better option. We stock replacement mesh for all the grades we fit.

How is the screen cleaned?

Run a soft brush across the mesh to clear loose dust and debris. For heavier deposits, take the frame out, rinse it with a hose and leave it to dry. The powder-coated aluminium frame wipes down with a damp cloth. No chemicals required.

Will it change how the window looks from outside?

Slightly. From any distance the mesh is nearly invisible. Close up, the aluminium frame adds a visible line inside the reveal. Most customers find it tidy. Charcoal mesh is less visible from outside than standard grey. We'd suggest agreeing a frame colour at the survey before ordering.

Do you supply and fit, or can I buy screens only?

We supply and fit only. We don't sell screens as DIY kits. The fit needs to be precise to eliminate gaps at the edges, and wrong measurements waste material. We come out, measure properly, and return to fit.
