What Are Cafe Style Shutters
Café style shutters cover the lower portion of your window, providing privacy while still allowing natural light to flood the room. Ideal for street-facing spaces, they offer a stylish balance of openness and seclusion, making them perfect for living rooms, kitchens, and dining areas.

Why Choose Cafe Style Shutters
Café style shutters are ideal if you want privacy without blocking natural light. By covering only the lower half of the window, they keep your space bright while reducing visibility from outside—making them perfect for street-facing rooms and creating a stylish, open feel.
Privacy below, light above
Café style shutters are fitted to the lower half of the window only, blocking sightlines from the street while leaving the top pane fully open. You get full natural light from above without net curtains or compromised views.
Adjustable louvre control
Each panel has a central tilt rod that rotates the louvres simultaneously from fully open to fully closed. Tilt them to angle light upward into the room or downward for complete privacy — all without moving the panels themselves.
Ideal for bay & sash windows
The lower-panel format suits traditional bay windows and Victorian sash windows particularly well. Panels are made to measure for each individual section, so angled returns and uneven sill depths are handled without compromise.
No cords, no blind mechanisms
Café style shutters are entirely cord-free. Panels open and close by hand on stainless steel hinges, and louvres tilt via the rigid tilt rod — no hanging cords at any point. This makes them fully compliant with current UK child safety regulations.
Made to measure per panel
Every shutter is built to the exact height of your lower window reveal — typically from the sill to the mid-rail or mid-glazing bar. Louvre size (47mm, 63mm, or 76mm) is chosen to suit the panel proportions and the room's style.
Hard-wearing painted finish
MDF and hardwood frames are painted in a smooth, wipe-clean finish. Standard white and off-white options are stocked; custom RAL colours are available to order. The painted surface holds up to daily handling without chipping or yellowing over time.
How café style shutters work
Café style shutters are solid panel shutters fitted only to the lower portion of the window. They hinge open fully and have no springs, cords, or motors — just a simple, durable mechanical system.

The L-frame and track
An L-shaped frame is fitted to the inner face of the window reveal, running along the sides and sill only — there is no top frame bar, which is what gives the café style its open upper appearance. The frame carries the hinge knuckles that the shutter panels mount into.
Panel hinging and opening
Each panel is hung on two or three stainless steel butt hinges fixed to the side frame. To open the window or let air through, you fold the panel back flat against the wall — it swings a full 180° and can be held open with a magnetic or hook-style shutter dog mounted to the wall return.
Tilt rod and louvre adjustment
The louvres — horizontal slats running across the panel — are linked at one end to a single vertical tilt rod. Pushing the tilt rod up or down rotates all louvres simultaneously between 0° (fully open, looking through) and 90° (fully closed, completely opaque). The movement is smooth and requires no tools.
Louvre size and panel sizing
Louvres come in 47mm, 63mm, and 76mm widths. Narrower louvres (47mm) suit smaller windows and a more traditional look; wider louvres (76mm) give a cleaner, more contemporary feel and a larger view-through when open. Panel height is cut to your exact lower reveal measurement.

CAFE STYLE SHUTTER FAQS
What windows are café style shutters best suited to?
Café style shutters work best on windows that face a street, pavement, or neighbour — anywhere you want privacy without losing daylight. They suit Victorian sash windows, bay windows, and front-facing living room or kitchen windows particularly well. They're less appropriate for very small windows or rooms where you want full blackout at night.
How do I clean café style shutters?
Wipe the louvres with a lightly damp cloth, working from one end to the other. Open the tilt rod fully so the louvres are horizontal and you can reach both faces. For a thorough clean, a dry microfibre cloth or a dusting brush works well between louvres. Avoid saturating MDF frames with water — wipe promptly if wet.
Are café style shutters child-safe?
Yes. Café style shutters are completely cord-free — there are no hanging cords or chains at any point. The panels open by hand on hinges, and the louvres are adjusted via the rigid tilt rod. This means they meet current UK child safety regulations without any additional accessories or breakaway connectors.
How long do café style shutters last?
Well-maintained shutters typically last 15–25 years. The stainless steel hinges and tilt rod mechanism are designed for daily use with minimal wear. Painted MDF can be touched up if scuffed; hardwood frames hold their finish longer under heavy use. The louvre joints occasionally need tightening after several years — a simple job with a small screwdriver.
