What Are Full Height Shutters

Full height shutters are ideal for complete window coverage, delivering excellent privacy and light control. Their simple, elegant design works in any space, providing a timeless look while helping to improve insulation and reduce outside noise.

Why Choose Full Height Shutters

One set of panels, the full window from top to sill. Full height shutters are the most versatile shutter style, they work on almost any window, in any room, and give you complete control over light, privacy, and insulation in a single clean installation.

Complete window coverage

Full height shutters run from the top of the window reveal to the sill in a single continuous panel set. There are no exposed gaps, no bare panes, and no secondary blind needed for night-time privacy. One installation handles everything the window needs.

Precise louvre light control

The central tilt rod rotates all louvres simultaneously between 0° (fully open, maximum view-through) and 90° (closed flat, fully opaque). At any angle in between, you can direct light upward into the ceiling or downward toward the floor — a level of control no roller or Roman blind can match.

Works on almost any window

Full height shutters can be fitted to standard rectangular windows, bay windows, arched windows, angled or sloped frames, and French doors. The L-frame is cut and joined on site to follow the exact reveal shape, so unusual window geometry is handled at the fitting stage rather than forced into a standard format.

Thermal and acoustic benefit

Closed full height shutters create a still air gap between the panel face and the glass. This reduces heat loss through single-glazed and older double-glazed windows noticeably — particularly on north-facing rooms. The same air gap dampens external noise, which matters in street-facing bedrooms and front rooms.

No cords — fully child-safe

Full height shutters are operated entirely by hand — panels fold open on stainless steel butt hinges and louvres tilt via the rigid tilt rod. There are no hanging cords or chains at any point in the system, making them fully compliant with current UK child safety regulations without any additional components.

Made to measure for your reveal

Every panel is cut to the exact internal dimensions of your window reveal — height, width, and depth. Mid-rails can be added at any point to break a tall panel into two hinged sections for easier operation. Louvre size (47mm, 63mm, or 76mm) is chosen to suit the panel proportions and your interior style.

How full height shutters work

Full height shutters are solid panel shutters fixed within the window reveal on a continuous L-frame. They have no springs, motors, or cords — the entire system is mechanical, built to last decades of daily use.

how full height shutters work
1

The full-perimeter L-frame

An L-shaped frame is fitted to all four sides of the window reveal — top, both sides, and sill — forming a continuous track that carries the hinge knuckles. The frame is scribed and cut to the exact reveal dimensions at the time of fitting, including any out-of-square corners or uneven plaster returns common in older properties.

2

Panel hinging and fold-back

Each panel is hung on two or three stainless steel butt hinges fixed to the side frame. On wider windows, two or more panels are hinged together in a bi-fold arrangement, stacking neatly to one or both sides of the reveal when open. Each panel swings a full 180° and can be held flat against the wall return with a magnetic shutter dog.

3

Tilt rod and louvre angle

A single central tilt rod links every louvre in the panel. Pushing the rod up or down rotates all louvres simultaneously — from fully open (louvres horizontal, maximum light and view) to fully closed (louvres vertical, completely opaque). The tilt rod is rigid and requires no tools; a light push moves all louvres in a single action.

4

Mid-rail and louvre size options

On taller windows (typically above 1.5m), a horizontal mid-rail is added to divide the panel into upper and lower hinged sections — this prevents louvre warp over time and makes the panel easier to handle. Louvres are available in 47mm, 63mm, and 76mm widths; wider louvres give a larger view-through when open and suit taller, more contemporary window proportions.

Full Height Shutter FAQs

Are full height shutters child-safe?

Yes. Full height shutters are completely cord-free throughout — no pull cords, no chain controls, and no motorised components unless you specifically add electric actuation. Panels fold by hand on hinges; louvres tilt via the rigid tilt rod. The system meets current UK child safety regulations in its standard configuration without any additional safety accessories.

How much do made-to-measure full height shutters cost?

Full height shutters sit between café style (less expensive) and tier-on-tier (more expensive) in terms of price per window. Exact cost depends on window width, frame material, louvre size, and the number of panels required. We quote a fixed price per window after a free home survey — no obligation to proceed, and no surprises on the day of fitting.

How do I clean full height shutters?

Wipe the louvres with a lightly damp microfibre cloth, working from one end to the other. Open the tilt rod to horizontal first so both faces of each louvre are accessible. For the frame, a dry cloth is usually enough. Dust regularly — weekly on south-facing windows where sunlight shows dust quickly. Avoid soaking MDF frames; wipe moisture away promptly.

What rooms and windows are full height shutters best suited to?

Full height shutters work in almost any room and on almost any window — living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and bay windows are all common applications. They're the most versatile shutter style. If you want complete coverage, total light control, and a clean finish that works day and night without a secondary blind, full height is the right choice.
