Pet Resistant Screens

Made-to-measure
pet-resistant screens
for windows and doors

Standard mesh shreds. A determined cat will work through a normal fly screen inside a week. Our pet-resistant screens use a vinyl-coated polyester mesh that's around three times thicker than standard fibreglass, built to take pawing and sustained scratching from most cats and dogs.

Both mesh types use the same aluminium frame and fixing system. The upgrade is the mesh insert only.

How it works

The frame is the same. The mesh is not.

The aluminium frame is identical to the profile we use across all our fly screens. What changes is the mesh. Standard fibreglass uses strands around 0.25mm thick, which is fine for blocking insects but tears quickly under any sustained pressure. Pet mesh uses vinyl-coated polyester strands closer to 0.8mm, with the coating adding grip that makes individual strands harder to snag and pull apart.

Made-to-measure matters here for a particular reason. Off-the-shelf screens have gaps at the corners and edges where they don't quite fill the opening. Cats in particular will find those gaps. A screen cut to your exact reveal leaves nowhere to hook a claw behind the frame.

  • We measure at your home

Our surveyor takes exact measurements of each opening. Pets are most likely to damage screens around the edges and corners, so the precise fit is especially important here.

  • Made in our own workshop

The frame is cut and assembled to your survey measurements. The pet mesh is fitted into it under tension before it leaves the workshop, so the installed screen arrives taut and secure.

  • Fitted, then done

Our fitter arrives with your finished screens and fits each one in minutes. No tools required from you. No assembly. The screen goes up and stays up.

Why choose pet-resistant screens

Six things worth knowing before you buy

  • Three times the strand thickness

Standard fibreglass mesh uses strands around 0.25mm thick. Pet mesh runs closer to 0.8mm, with a vinyl coating on top. That extra bulk is what stops cats and dogs from pulling individual strands loose when they claw or push at the screen.

  • Same frame, different mesh

The aluminium frame is identical across the whole range. If you have standard screens already and want to upgrade to pet mesh, we can replace just the insert without changing the frame or the fixing method.

  • Still stops insects

Heavier strands don't mean larger gaps. The mesh count stays fine enough to keep out midges, flies and wasps. The mesh does the same job as standard, it's just built to survive sharing a home with an animal.

  • Available across the full range

Pet mesh works across every screen type we fit: casement windows, tilt-and-turn, sash windows, single doors, French doors and bi-fold doors. Anywhere a pet can reach and cause damage, we can fit it.

  • Mesh replaces without the frame

The frame outlasts the mesh. When the mesh eventually needs replacing, we bring a new insert and reuse the existing frame. No full re-fit, no new aluminium profile, no unnecessary disruption.

  • Less visible in charcoal

Pet mesh is available in charcoal as well as standard green-grey. Charcoal reduces the visual contrast of the mesh against the view beyond, making the screen considerably less obvious when you're sitting looking out through the window.

Standard vs pet-resistant

Why the mesh choice matters in a house with pets

Both mesh types block insects. Both fit the same aluminium frame. The difference is how they hold up once your cat decides to test them.

Standard

Standard fibreglass mesh

Fine for most homes without pets. Blocks insects well and has minimal visual impact. Under persistent clawing or direct pressure from a dog pushing against it, the strands pull out of the mesh quickly.

  • 0.25mm strand thickness
  • Splits under sustained clawing
  • Blocks midges, flies and wasps
  • Not suitable where pets have window access
Pet-resistant

Pet-resistant vinyl mesh

Three times the strand thickness, with a vinyl coating that resists snagging. This mesh takes normal pet behaviour, including daily claw-testing from cats and leaning from medium-sized dogs, without splitting or deforming.

  • 0.8mm vinyl-coated polyester strands
  • Resists clawing and sustained pressure
  • Same insect protection as standard mesh
  • Charcoal option available to reduce visibility

Frame colours

Where pet-resistant screens work best

The rooms and situations that need it most

  • 01

    Cat households

The main reason most people ask for this mesh. Cats claw and push at fly screens routinely, and standard mesh won't last. Pet mesh takes the same daily treatment without the strands pulling loose.

  • 02

    Dog households

Works well for most small to medium breeds that push or lean against screen doors. A large dog throwing its full weight at a screen repeatedly will eventually cause damage to any mesh type, so ask us about door options with a solid lower panel if that's your situation.

  • 03

    Patio and French doors

Bi-fold and French doors get more pet traffic than windows. Fitting pet mesh to both door panels means the doors can stay open in summer without you having to pull animals away from the screen every hour.

  • 04

    Ground-floor rooms

Ground-floor windows are accessible to cats whether you're in the room or not. Pet mesh on lower windows means you can leave them open for ventilation without coming home to a screen that needs replacing.

  • 05

    Kitchens

Kitchen windows are usually open more than any other room. The combination of cooking smells drifting in, heat, and an interested cat is hard on standard mesh. Pet mesh handles the consistent exposure better.

  • 06

    Utility and back doors

Utility rooms and boot rooms often have their own doors to outside. A pet mesh screen fitted to the utility door lets you ventilate the room without the screen becoming collateral damage every time the dog passes through.

Customer reviews

What customers say about pet-resistant screens

★★★★★

"We have three cats and every standard fly screen we'd tried lasted about a fortnight. These have been in place for eight months and they look exactly as they did when first fitted. Worth every penny."

Sandra M.
Darlington — pet mesh, bedroom and kitchen windows
★★★★★

"Our springer spaniel would push straight through a normal screen door. The pet mesh has held up completely. The fitter was upfront about what it can and can't handle with bigger dogs, which I appreciated."

Tim W.
Newcastle — pet mesh, French doors
★★★★★

"Fitted to the bedroom and kitchen windows. The cats test them regularly and there's no sign of damage. The charcoal mesh means you barely notice the screens from inside, which was my main concern."

Rachel B.
Chester-le-Street — charcoal pet mesh, three windows

Questions & answers

Common questions about pet-resistant screens

Something not covered? Give us a call or request a survey. Our team is happy to talk through your specific situation before you commit to anything.

What makes pet-resistant mesh different from standard mesh?

Pet mesh uses vinyl-coated polyester strands around 0.8mm thick. Standard fibreglass runs closer to 0.25mm. The thickness and the vinyl coating make the strands harder to snag or pull apart during normal pet behaviour. The mesh density is still fine enough to block flies and midges.

Will it stop a large dog pushing through?

Pet mesh handles clawing and leaning from most cats and small to medium dogs without damage. A large dog pushing at full weight repeatedly will eventually cause damage to any mesh screen. If you have a large or very energetic dog, ask us at the survey about door options with a solid lower panel, which removes the mesh from the zone most dogs are likely to hit.

Can it be fitted to the same windows as standard fly screens?

Yes. Pet mesh uses the same aluminium frame as our standard screens. If you already have frames fitted and want to upgrade, we replace the mesh insert without touching the frame or the fixing method. Bring your original survey paperwork and we can usually confirm whether your frames are compatible before we visit.

Does the heavier mesh reduce airflow or light?

The mesh is thicker strand-for-strand than standard fibreglass, but the mesh density is similar. The difference in airflow is barely noticeable. There's a slight reduction in light transmission, though not enough that most people notice it once the screen is fitted and they're used to it being there.

Is it available for both windows and doors?

Yes. Pet mesh works across the full range, including casement windows, tilt-and-turn windows, sash windows, single doors, French doors and bi-fold doors. We can fit it anywhere in the house where pets have access to a screen.

What colours does pet mesh come in?

Standard green-grey and charcoal. Charcoal is worth considering for living rooms and bedrooms because the darker tone reduces the visual contrast of the mesh against the view outside, making the screen much less obvious from inside the room.

How long does pet-resistant mesh last?

That depends heavily on how active your pets are. In a household with one or two cats that test the mesh occasionally, pet mesh typically lasts several years before showing any visible wear. When it does wear out, the mesh replaces separately without needing a new frame, so the cost is lower than a full re-fit.

Is there a charge for the home survey?

The survey is free and there's no obligation to proceed. Our surveyor will measure each opening, show you the mesh and frame colour options and give you a fixed price on the spot. If you decide to go ahead, that quoted price is what you pay with no surprises on installation day.
